Master Key System Setup: How Tiered Access Works in Practice
A master key system is not simply a matter of cutting one key that opens many locks. It relies on a process called 'keying alike with master wafers,' where each lock cylinder is engineered with two shear lines: one that responds to its individual change key and a second that responds to the master. Commercial-grade mortise lock cylinders are the preferred hardware for this application because their larger, more complex internal geometry accommodates the additional wafers without compromising security. At Irmo Locksmiths, our skilled technicians assess your building layout, count your access points, map out which personnel need access to which zones, and then design a keying matrix before any hardware is ordered or modified. That matrix becomes the living document your system grows from as your team and your space evolve.
The tiers most Irmo businesses use look something like this: individual employee keys open only their assigned office or work area; a department-level master opens every door within a single department; a building master opens every door in the structure; and, for businesses with multiple properties, a grandmaster reaches all of them. We have helped businesses near the Irmo Town Hall area implement systems that cleanly separate management access from general-staff access while still giving maintenance personnel the single key they need to service every space. Every system we design is documented so future re-keying or expansion can be handled without starting over from scratch.
