What Our Home Rekeying Service Actually Changes — and What It Leaves Alone
Rekeying is not the same as replacing your locks. When a trained Irmo Locksmiths technician rekeys your home, they disassemble each lock cylinder, swap out the internal driver pins and key pins for a new combination, and reassemble everything so that only the freshly cut key will operate the lock. Your existing hardware — the finish, the door prep, the strike plate, the lockset itself — stays exactly in place. This is important for homeowners who have invested in quality hardware like Schlage deadbolts or Kwikset SmartKey door knob locks, because there is no reason to replace well-functioning hardware simply because the key needs to change.
The process is especially significant when dealing with a mortise lock. Mortise locks are the heavy-duty, rectangular-body locks often found on older Irmo homes and craftsman-style front doors. Rekeying a mortise lock requires a slightly different procedure than a standard cylindrical lock — the cylinder must be carefully extracted from the mortise body, repinned to the new key profile, and reinserted without disturbing the cam or tailpiece alignment. Our technicians carry the specialized tools and pin kits needed to service mortise lock cylinders on-site, so there is no waiting on parts or a second visit.
